Howling Hellmouth Print

The Hellmouth is certainly one of the most arresting motifs to emerge from the Middle Ages. Often found among the illuminations of clerical scribes the Hellmouth depicted the so-called entrance to Hell and it became a popular backdrop for medieval theatre. Historically it was used by proponents of theology who frequently depicted their enemies as being cast into the fires of Hell through the flaming jaws of the Hellmouth. Issued to coincide with the release of the Daemonologie of King James, this charming Reformation Era version is hand-screened on a heavy art paper-stock in an edition of just 100 copies. This print is a great companion to our Flying Ointment Art Print.
